What is mastery-based learning? A plain-language guide

In shortMastery-based learning is an approach where a learner moves to the next topic only after demonstrating they understand the current one — instead of moving on because the lesson ended. Time becomes flexible; understanding becomes the constant. Decades of research, starting with Bloom (1984), show large learning gains when this is done well.

In a traditional classroom, time is fixed and understanding varies: the lesson ends, the class moves on, and the student who did not understand percentages is calculating percentage change a week later. Mastery-based learning inverts this: understanding is fixed, and time varies.

What does "mastery" actually mean?

Mastery means a learner can do more than repeat a procedure. They can explain the idea in their own words, apply it in an unfamiliar context, and recognise a typical mistake. Content is split into units with explicit prerequisites, and each unit ends with a comprehension check designed to test understanding — not recall.

A classic example: "A price rises by 50%, then falls by 50%. Is it back where it started?" A learner who memorised procedures says yes. A learner who understands that a percentage is always a percentage of something says no — the result is 75% of the original. Speed and completed-exercise counts cannot see this difference; a comprehension check can.

Where does the idea come from?

The research base goes back decades. Benjamin Bloom’s "2 Sigma Problem" (Educational Researcher, 1984) reported that students tutored one-to-one with mastery methods performed about two standard deviations better than students in conventional classrooms. Bloom’s challenge to the field was to find methods as effective as one-to-one tutoring but feasible for a whole class. That challenge is what modern adaptive technology, used carefully, tries to answer.

Why speed is not the goal

Adaptive systems are often marketed as "learn faster". Some learners do move faster; that is a side effect, not the point. The point is continuity of understanding: nobody advances with a gap in their foundations. Gaps compound — a learner who never understood fractions will struggle with percentages, then with statistics, and each failure looks like a new problem when it is really the same old one.

What it takes to work in a real school

Three things, in our experience preparing the first OpenSchool pilot in Latvia. First, comprehension checks that genuinely test understanding — writing these is pedagogical work, not a technical afterthought. Second, an escalation path: when a learner is stuck, the system must hand over to a teacher instead of looping the same exercise. Third, honest measurement: progress with understanding intact, time actually freed for other activities, and results broken down across learner groups — not just averages.

The teacher’s role shifts from delivering content to mentoring: seeing exactly where each learner is stuck and intervening where a human is needed. We call this role the Guide. The technology handles repetition; the human handles judgment.

Is mastery-based learning the same as self-paced learning?

They overlap but are not identical. Self-paced means learners control the schedule; mastery-based means advancement is gated by demonstrated understanding. A mastery system is usually self-paced within limits, but self-paced systems without comprehension gates are not mastery-based.

Does it work for every subject?

It fits best where knowledge builds cumulatively — mathematics, languages, sciences. For open-ended domains (essay writing, projects), mastery elements apply to component skills, while the integrative work stays with the teacher.
